Creative Writing Workshops

“I really enjoyed the ‘Reaching Beyond the Human’ workshop, it took me out of my comfort zone, and was incredibly inspiring and I loved all the stories shared! The prompts were amazing too, I really got in a zone.”
— Sophie
“Gayle was an inspiring addition to our final year course, ‘Imagination, Creativity and Innovation in Science’. A delight to host, Gayle gave the students confidence to explore new and weird ideas and ways of thinking – it was fun and extremely useful – my students loved it.”
— Dr John Baird, Senior Lecturer, School of Biological Sciences, University of Aberdeen

change in the making

The creative process as a tool for proactive change

As of spring 2024, I don’t yet have any workshops in the workshop, but you can find out more about the outline of previous ones here, or scroll down for quick tour of the various Aberdeen workshops.

At some point, I still hope to design some structured workshops to help those with (possibly still secret) creative hopes to develop and expand their skills.

  • The Experience of Writing a Book

  • Creativity for Engineers, Scientists and Other Curious People

  • Creative Cross-Pollination: Photography and Writing

  • Surreal, Fantastical and Abstract Writing in Response to Art

“Gayle designed a wonderful workshop that enabled participants to use creative thinking as a tool for proactive change. The sound of laughter during the session was one of the best moments of the entire series! We used the framework of Gayle’s ‘Hopes and Wishes’ workshop throughout the community assemblies. I couldn’t have imagined how useful one workshop would be – it was an invaluable part of the assembly.”
— Chris Bodington, Community Development Worker, North East Scotland Climate Action Network Hub
“I found Gayle’s creative writing workshop to be the most engaging and fulfilling class out of the whole 4 years of my University journey! Coming towards the end of a science degree, it felt incredibly refreshing to connect to that creative pool we all have inside of us that we sometimes lose touch with a little. Gayle led the workshop with such enthusiasm and energy, it was so inspiring and personally gave me such a beautiful sense of calm and playfulness, like revisiting an old friend.”
— Willow Holdcroft, final year zoology student, University of Aberdeen

Writing in Response to Art

24 August 2023
Fittie Hall, Aberdeen

Using images of visual art as prompts, we looked at a few approaches to ekphrastic writing and from there our writers headed off in many directions – fiction, personal responses, journalling, poetry, spoken word…

If you missed it and would like to have a go, here are the six approaches we experimented with.

Thanks for coming and helping to make this such a fun and inspiring evening!

Creative Writing
Aberdeen beach – 10 June 2023 Thanks for sharing your wild imaginings!

“The workshop was excellent. Thank you again for hosting such a welcoming space. I really liked the template that I picked up, modelling how to write about an object in detail. It seems like a great way to exercise your descriptive muscles – certainly something I could use more practice with! The variety of choices of prompts and items to be inspired by was great too.”
— Lauren
“I absolutely loved the creative writing workshop Gayle hosted for our course, which enabled me to finally write something that’s not a scientific essay or my to-do list! Exploring the deepest thoughts and emotions that surfed through my mind at that moment, releasing them from the oppression by our constant rushed lives, I found myself at peace, as if time had stopped, letting my hand write on the paper a somewhat poetical reflection about the wonders of nature. Inspiring, fun, creative, stimulating, and...challenging!”
— Ainhoa Burgos Aguilera, final year zoology student, University of Aberdeen

“Thank you so much for another fantastic study session with your wonderful book, ‘Emerald Noose’. The children loved studying your texts and analysing how you write, it really helped to boost their understanding to use such fantastic writing. The children also absolutely loved your ‘Meet the Author’ session, it was magical. Real life authors to children are a little bit like unicorns! The children loved chatting with you and finding out your life and how you approach writing. Thank you SO much!”
— Anne Nadel, Founder of West London Tutoring

transformative nature

Yoga and Creative Writing Retreat –11th March 2023 – It was super chilled, thanks for coming!

“Gayle created a superbly organized, well-structured event and attracted a wonderful range of talented young, and a few not-so-young, writers. All that – and a relaxed atmosphere in a perfect setting. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and it was obvious that everyone else did too. What was particularly impressive was the quality of the work produced and the alacrity with which participants volunteered to stand up and read. Gayle created the conditions for this to happen.”
