Creative Writing Workshop – £8

Thursday 24 August 2023, 6.30pm to 8.30pm

Fittie Community Hall, Aberdeen

Marischal College during Spectra Festival 2023

Join us at the recently-refurbished Fittie Community Hall in Aberdeen for a friendly and supportive evening workshop of writing in response to art.

Using images of visual art as prompts, we’ll look at a few approaches to ekphrastic writing and from there you can go in any direction – fiction, personal responses, journalling, poetry, spoken word…

From inhabiting people who appear in paintings to creating dramatic scenes within a landscape, inferring a mood or emotion, taking up the challenge of a minor detail or unusual idea, all the way through to capturing a rhythm and writing jazz-style, writing in response to art can give you different ways of accessing the world and, via the artist’s intuition, take you places you couldn’t ordinarily reach.

I’ll provide images for you to work from but please do feel free to bring your own, including your own artwork or sketches, if you’d like to see how you can deepen and extend your practice by writing in response to your work at a different time and in a different setting.

I’ve booked the hall until 9.00pm and we can BYO, but of course you’re very welcome to come for as long or as little as you can.

Please bring your own analog writing materials and instruments. No laptops or other magic button devices, sorry!
